About the Client
The client is a leading NGO focused on preserving indigenous languages and empowering communities through self-sufficient linguistic tools. Their goal was to help underserved communities develop culturally relevant orthographies with minimal external intervention.
The Problem
Many language communities struggled to create sustainable writing systems due to:
- Lack of linguistic expertise within communities.
- High dependency on external consultants, leading to inconsistent results.
- Inefficient and complex phonological analysis tools, slowing down the process.
Previous attempts to introduce orthography tools failed due to complexity and lack of cultural relevance, resulting in low adoption rates.
Our Approach
Lauren developed OrthoApp, a user-friendly orthography development platform tailored to community needs. Our approach included:
- Phonological Analysis Integration: Enabled accurate sound system analysis through AI-driven linguistics models.
- Resilience Linguistics: Ensured cultural relevance and adaptability to local dialects.
- Community-Centric Design: Encouraged community participation for sustainable adoption.
- Minimal External Dependency: Designed to empower communities to manage and modify their writing systems independently.
The Result
- Enabled accuracy in phonological analysis, improving orthography development efficiency.
- Achieved faster adoption of new writing systems within target communities.
- Increased language preservation through consistent use of the orthography app.
